Modes and self-hosting
MagnetGate has three separate ways to connect. Only the first one involves the operator's nodes, and only it can be paid in RQT.
| Mode | How you get access | Traffic | Payments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal access | a free MG1-… code from magnet.norma.so | TCP and UDP through public Hysteria2 nodes in Finland and the Netherlands | free tier, or full access paid in RQT |
| Your own trusted group | a shared key (PSK) from the group's owner | the group's own exits, found through Mainline DHT and Nostr; Reality, Hysteria2 or a native fallback | never |
| Peer pilot | an invitation to the experimental peer network | web traffic through volunteers' exits | not yet (planned: exits earn RQT) |
Personal access
- Codes are issued automatically on the website after a human check; no card is needed.
- Each code works on up to two devices, each with its own credentials. Revoking a code disconnects its devices.
- The app keeps the code in the system's secure storage.
- Public access uses Hysteria2 over UDP; it cannot connect where the network blocks that UDP transport entirely.
Your own group
A group owner runs one or more exits on their own servers. An exit publishes a signed, encrypted offer to the BitTorrent Mainline DHT and to Nostr relays; members find it with the shared key, so there is no central server, domain or broker to configure. The native channel adds forward secrecy on top of the shared key. This mode never involves payments or the operator's service.
Self-hosting
MagnetGate is MIT-licensed and works without Requant. Anyone who builds it and runs it for themselves gets a complete VPN with no wallet, no payment service and no RQT. In a deployment that does not switch payments on, the apps show no payment screen and never contact a Requant node.

Privacy, plainly
- The access service stores account and device identifiers, expiry, traffic totals and, with payments, deposits. It does not store browsing history.
- Website requests and the human check pass through Cloudflare; VPN traffic goes to the nodes.
- MagnetGate is not an anonymity service and does not promise protection against every leak.
